Email marketing campaigns – do’s and don’ts

Email marketing campaigns need to be treated very seriously. They generally don’t cost a lot of money, but they can take a lot of time. So, if you don’t want to waste your time, you need to make sure your campaign will have good results.

Sending marketing emails might sound like a piece of cake to many people: just writing emails about your products and services and sending them to a long list of contacts. Well, you can do it this way to, but this doesn’t mean you are organizing an efficient Internet marketing campaign. There are some important characteristics of a good marketing email: it needs to be persuasive, to determine the customers to act and all that to be accomplished in a short text.

  • The subject you choose for your marketing emails is crucial. If it’s a catchy one, people will click on your email to open it. If not, they will simply delete it. A catchy subject line has to contain references to discounts, special offers, new, revolutionary products or other things interesting for the customers.
  • Keep the important information on top. People don’t usually read the entire email. If there is a message you really want to send, write it in the first and second paragraph.
  • Organize the email text on categories, to make it easier for the customers to find what they need. A marketing email telling the customers that you sell books and containing a single link to your website won’t bring you a lot of new customers. It’s better to organize your products on categories: travel books, literature, poetry, cooking books and so on, and to give a different link for each category. This way, people will find what they need in a matter of seconds, without having to read the entire email (very few people do that anyway).
  • Don’t include excessive graphics and images to the emails. Your emails will take a lot to open and the customers will be bored and simply give up. Also, a lot of people read their emails on small gadgets like smartphones and tablets. It’s hard to read emails with lots of graphics, images and HTML on such devices. This is why you should only include links to your own website and keep the images and graphics to minimum.
  • Your main goal is to convince customers to buy your products and services. Include calls to action in your emails. Things like “Buy now” or “Click here”, although might sound like commonplace, are in fact very useful and efficient inside the text of your marketing emails.
  • Don’t complicate things. Don’t put in the same marketing email links to multiple websites, to a lot of different products and services. Customers will get confused about the message and they will give up on reading the email. If you have more than one website you want to promote, create a marketing email for each of them.
  • Keep the marketing emails as short as possible.
