A Search Engine is a software program that hunts down websites based on the words or phrases that you tell it to search for. It searches for these words by looking through the list of data and information stored in its database.
Search Engines get this information into their databases by sending out computerised 'spiders' that 'crawl' through as many website pages as it can possibly find, then creates an index of their content, noting whether it is linked to other web pages.
Until a Search Engine spider visits your website, it won't have any idea that you exist. That's why it's so important to 'submit' your website domain name to them every time you create or update you website; they spider pages on a regular basis and revisit to update the information they have in their databases.
That's why many people build fabulous websites that languish unknown, and unvisited because no-one knows they're there.
It's also why, when I create a website purchased through Internet-Creatives.com, I create a special document (an xml document called a 'sitemap'), and submit it to the top three Search Engines to let them know of your presence in Cyberspace.
